The problem: many South African Zoho accounts were set up before the local edition

Zoho now has a VAT-ready South Africa edition of Zoho Books. Businesses that started earlier may still be on the Global edition, with VAT rates added by hand. Common problems:

What we often see
  • "Our VAT201 numbers are built in a spreadsheet at the end of each period."
  • "Customers are not marked as VAT registered or not, so invoices are inconsistent."
  • "Sales works in one tool and accounts in another."
Inside Zoho Books

How Zoho Books supports South African VAT

Zoho Books South Africa edition, as described by Zoho:

Zoho Books · South Africa edition Settings
  • VAT201 reports to support your VAT filing.
  • Tax rates that follow SARS rules on sales and purchases.
  • Items mapped to standard VAT rates, so sales and purchase tax fill in automatically.
  • Contact VAT treatment VAT registered, non-VAT registered or overseas.
  • VAT audit reports and VAT payment records.
15% standard VAT rate

The standard VAT rate is 15%; the increase announced in the 2025 Budget was reversed. Your accountant or tax practitioner stays responsible for tax advice and SARS filing.

Moving editions

Should you move from the Global edition to the South Africa edition?

Zoho offers South African businesses a migration from the Global edition to the South Africa edition. As per Zoho's help document:

Today Global edition Tax rates added by hand
After the move South Africa edition Local tax rules built in

What Zoho asks for

  • Your base currency must be ZAR and your organisation location must be South Africa.
  • VAT rates are filled in as per South African VAT rules, and you get VAT201 returns and VAT audit reports.
  • Some features, such as TDS, must be turned off first, and you choose whether to map or turn off old tax rates.

How we help

We review your organisation, list what will change, and plan and test the move with your accountant before your next VAT period.

Our checklist

Things we check in every South African Zoho setup

Checked in every project
Setup checklist
  • Data centre: Zoho has no data centre in South Africa yet; 2026 reports say it is planning one. We confirm where your account is hosted and whether that fits your POPIA and contract needs.
  • Books edition: South Africa edition, or Global edition that needs migration.
  • Currency: ZAR base currency, plus others for imports and exports.
  • Licences: Zoho shows prices in ZAR on its own site; cost depends on app, plan and users. See Zoho Books South Africa pricing and Zoho One pricing. You can buy licences directly from Zoho or through Infobyd — we resell Zoho licences in your country too.
  • Our invoices: billing currency for our services, in ZAR or USD — we bill in your local currency.

How we work with South African teams

  1. A free 30-minute video call first, then a written plan and quote.
  2. Your morning is our afternoon, so we hold a weekly call in the shared hours, build and test the same day, and give live training that is also recorded.
  3. Whether you are looking for a Zoho consultant for Johannesburg or for Cape Town, the process is the same and fully online.
  4. Time depends on scope — we share a clear plan after the free consultation.
